After my best friend Lindsey and I danced our way across America in August, the idea was sinking in that "good old moving to the music and not caring about what I look like" dance is where its at. The ability to cut loose on the dance floor was more of a communication across cultural barriers than talking. Then, in September I took my first Zumba class - dancing with abandon for about an hour with people between the ages 22 and 65, all different backgrounds and ethnicities. It was awesome.
Combining these experiences, led me to imagine if world leaders could have a dance party, would peace be possible? Imagine, Bashar al-Assad, Putin, and Obama having a dance off!
In many other countries around the world, dance is a pivotal part of any get together. In Guatemala it is thought that if dancing doesn't happen, the gathering was a flop. Over December and January, I will be studying dance halls, social gatherings, and any other situation where dance happens. I hope to develop a finer thesis to this research, but at this point I want to find out what causes the abandon, how do people gather for these events, and why are people dancing. Ultimately, asking myself and others, can dance bring peace to the world?
